About Kolegas da Paz (KDP)

KDP is a not profit NGO in Timor-Leste to improve the lives of Rural Community and women empowerment.

Founded in 2008 by Dra. Olga Matilde da Costa Ed., the organisation seeks to advocacy, sustainable livelihoods, disaster risk reduction and women empowerment.

SERVICES

Peacebuilding and advocacy

The KdP aims to continue the work that Austcare started in the Viqueque District and replicate, where applicable, following review of lessons learned, in other districts of the country. The aim of this program is to enable formal and informal community structures from aldeia to district/municipal level to prevent violence, rebuild communities out of violence and promote continuing peace between individuals, households and communities.

Climate change adaptation/DRR/Food Security

To improve agricultural production, KdP will focus on soil fertility improvement, water conservation and management, seed saving, home gardening, integrated pest management and other sustainable agriculture technologies. DRR initiatives will complement agricultural production priorities. The priority aim is to ensure self-sufficiency in food by households, ensuring that households produce primarily for home consumption, considering the nutritional requirements of families.

Youth Empowerment Services (YES)

To prepare young people for productive endeavors, KdP will provide opportunities for learning new skills and for enhancing social relations with peers and adults.

BACKGROUND KDP

(Kolegas da Paz)

Kolegas da Paz (KdP) or Friends of Peace is a Timorese non-government organization with an overall focus on peace-building and advocacy, sustainable livelihoods, disaster risk reduction and youth empowerment.

Organized in August 2008, KdP served as an associate partner of Austcare (now Action Aid-Australia) in the implementation of its Peacebuilding programs in the eastern districts of Timor Leste (Viqueque, Baucau and Lautem districts) using Austcare’s Neighbourhood Corner’s approach to peace building.

Following the closure of the Austcare country office in Timor Leste, the KdP team decided to continue its peace building initiatives in the Viqueque District.

The KdP was formed by former Austcare staff and service-oriented board members who are committed to its vision of contributing to the creation of lasting and durable peace in Timor Leste from the grassroots to the national level.

Its mission is to help empower individuals, groups and communities to work together and with government authorities in achieving this vision.

KdP works with young people, households, groups, formal and informal community leaders and government structures towards conflict transformation and peace building, sustainable livelihoods, youth skills development and disaster risk reduction.
